University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) is one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in the country. This Midlands-based Trust has over 13,000 staff providing care across 48 specialties, spanning five hospitals (including one of the biggest Trauma and Orthopaedics Specialties in the country and Children’s services at both Derby and Burton Hospitals) which care for more than one million patients each year and serves a population of a similar size across South Derbyshire, South East Staffordshire and beyond.

The Trust is on the cusp of embarking upon a major transformation programme with investment approved for the introduction of a wide range of “solutions” of a technology nature and innovative IT – “digitisation”. During the next two to three years, this will positively enhance the experience of internal stakeholders as well as external customers – patients.

Accountable to the Executive Director of Finance & Performance, the Trust is now seeking to appoint a CDIO who will be responsible for the overall delivery of digital and technology capabilities across the landscape.

The Opportunity

  • Play a leading role, working with partners, in the digital enablement of health service transformation across region
  • Ensure that the Digital & Technology Strategy for the Trust, and its delivery plan, is sensitive to and takes into consideration specific requirements, clinical and business drivers
  • Lead the procurement process for a single Electronic Patient Record system then manage the implementation of the single system across the Trust, integrating with other clinical systems
  • Engage with stakeholders to warrant effective clinical input into and support for the development and implementation of strategy and plans
  • Manage the ongoing development of performance management systems that make it easier for managers and clinicians to understand how effectively the Trust’s “Technology Directorate” is operating
  • Take direct responsibility for the management, development and professional leadership of circa 100+ staff across several departments
  • Assume annual budgetary responsibility of revenue and capital spend including delivery of cost improvement programmes for the Trust

Background and Experience

  • Substantial and wide-ranging experience at director level in large, complex customer-facing organisations – healthcare or other sectors with comparable complexities and shared service delivery pressures
  • Evidence of leading the strategy and development of Digital Technology & information solutions to support the ongoing transformation of a business – become the advocate of “what digitisation can do for the Trust”
  • Track record to include significant management experience of implementing complex programmes, encompassing technology and clinical services
  • Experience of developing and managing a sizeable, value-adding IT function within a large organisation, with the motivational skills to encourage collaborative working across the technology landscape
  • A self-motivated leader and team player, able to work within a challenging, intellectually stimulating environment with excellent oral and written skills & the aptitude to communicate in an organized and concise manner
  • Degree-level education with proven project management experience and proven business analysis skills
